A tradition for a few, a guilty pleasure for others, a love at first bite for a few and a treat for others, looks like a baked version of the rounded moon and tastes divine, like Gulab Jamun. Here's how you can savour this Indian delicacy without worrying about sugar and calories.
Ingredients:
For the Jamuns:
- 1 cup milk powder
- 1/4 cup all-purpose flour
- 1/4 tsp baking soda
- 2 tbsp ghee (clarified butter)
- 3-4 tbsp milk
- 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
For the Syrup:
- 1 cup water
- 1tsp Swee10 (adjust to taste)
- 1/2 tsp rose water
- A few saffron strands
- 1/4 tsp cardamom powder
Method:
- Prepare the Syrup:
- Combine water, Swee10, saffron strands, and cardamom powder in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 5-7 minutes.
- Add rose water and set aside to cool.
- Make the Dough:
- Combine milk powder, all-purpose flour, baking soda, and cardamom powder in a mixing bowl.
- Add ghee and mix well. Gradually add milk, kneading into a soft dough. Let it rest for 10 minutes.
- Shape the Jamuns:
- Divide the dough into small, smooth balls, ensuring no cracks.
- Fry the Jamuns:
- Heat ghee or oil in a deep pan over medium heat.
- Fry the jamun balls until golden brown, ensuring even cooking by stirring gently.
- Soak in Syrup:
- Place the fried jamuns into the warm syrup. Let them soak for at least 1 hour, allowing them to absorb the flavours.
